40 DAY CHURCHING IN THE ORTHODOX FAITH
On the 40th day after giving birth, the mother and child attend Church for the purpose of the mother being ceremoniously purified and of the child being formally received and brought or presented by the Priest to the Church. This Orthodox ceremony has been established following the receiving into the temple of the infant Christ with His Mother on the 40th day after His birth in compliance with the regulations of the Mosaic Law (Leviticus 12). The purpose of the 40 day churching is to reestablish the full communion between the woman who gave birth and the sacramental life of the Church, especially with receiving Holy Communion, interrupted by the period of forty days. It should be noted that the woman is not being absolved as if the giving of birth per se were considered to be a sin. The prayers recited by the Priest do include the words “cleanse” and “forgive” but these words are offered with the sense of the physical act of giving birth and the showing of compassion upon the woman by God.
40 DAY CHURCHING AT HOLY TRINITY CHURCH
Usually when a newborn child reaches his/her two (2) week birth date, the parents should call Fr. Chris in order to schedule the 40 day Churching. The 40 day Churching should fall on the 40th day, obviously that does not always happen. Therefore, the 40 day Churching should fall as close as possible to the actual 40th day of birth. The Churching will take place on a Sunday, unless the parents request a different day and time. Requesting a different day and time must be agreed upon by Fr. Chris and the parents.
Please follow the guidelines set here:
The parents and child should arrive at the Church between 10:45 Am and 11:00 AM.
The parents and child must remain in the Narthex once they arrive.
At the appropriate time, Fr. Chris will proceed to the Narthex where he shall begin the 40 Day Churching service.
At the appropriate time, Fr. Chris along with the parents and child will walk to the steps of the Solea in order to complete the service.
Fr. Chris will stand on the Solea with the child while the parents remain at the steps of the Solea.
When the service is finished Fr. Chris will hand the child back to the mother and the parents will proceed back to a pew until the end of the service.
The Tradition of the Orthodox Faith is that when a male child receives his 40 day Churching, the Priest will take him into the Altar area during the blessing. The Tradition of the Orthodox Faith is that when a female child receives her 40 day Churching, the Priest will take her only before the Iconostasion and not into the Altar area.
